Method for beginners:

„Playing the piano – This has always been my dream!“

Adults who want to start to play the piano are the exception because it was assumed: “What you didn’t learn during childhood you will never learn in your adulthood.” During the recent years, more and more piano methods for adults have spread in the market. Students as well as teachers find ever growing interests to deal with this theme. Each person is different; each one has his or her own qualities and weaknesses which they carry around with them.

The piano method which was created by me is not available for purchase, as I adjust myself to each student individually. Especially in the beginning it is most important how you are introduced to playing the piano. In this teaching there won’t be just any method imposed on you; it will be specifically tailored to your own individual needs.

I create individually your own method from your resources that you are bringing along with you.

Overcoming your own boundaries and rediscovering your own feelings – those will be experiences that you will find with this method.

Through playing music you will open up new horizons of your inner self. Developing your emotional world through music is one of the greatest experiences that a human can have.

Experienced players:

„As a child, I had piano lessons for a few years but I aborted them much too early because I had no desire to practice. Now I would gladly like to start again, but as an adult this surely isn’t possible anymore!”

Finding the right entry requires a lot of sensitivity for your wishes, knowledge of possible literature and the gift to accompany and to guide you on your journey with the goal to bring joy and pleasure into your “new life” as well as facing challenges. The teaching is solely attuned on your individual wishes, your skills and your needs.

Concomitant to the piano lessons I continually offer knowledge of the various music genres and praxis-oriented harmony teaching. The diversity of music literature extends from baroque to modern. A further main emphasis of my teaching lies on playing the piano à quatre mains – with four hands.

My longtime educational experience with teaching and your enthusiasm and interest for the piano and music will show you just after a few weeks that it was the right decision to start this new adventure.

The piano - An old friend???

Christmas – the festival of presents and surprises… And what a surprise was waiting for me!
My son, with a beaming face, handed me an envelope with the words: “I have a special gift for you here, which will open up access to a “new world”, which will challenge your spirit and hopefully bring you much joy”. An introduction which I received with mixed feelings and which made me suspect “terrible things”. I only thought: “What is that coming to me?” I received the answer to this immediately when I opened the envelope. Embedded in a large Christmas card (with a lot of text) I found a voucher for once piano tuning and a voucher for one year of online piano lessons. I just thought to myself: What am I supposed to do with it? To my comment: “That’s very sweet of you, but I’m afraid that this is probably 65 years too late for me…” my son replied laconically: “First read what I wrote to you about it, and then we can talk further. The attached Christmas card contained a bouquet of good reasons why I should accept this gift. It began with the statement,

  • that one is never too old to try new things,
  • that the beautiful piano at home (after the children have moved out) could not be left standing around as useless furniture,
  • that this hobby is a real challenge and (even at my age) not overly strenuous,
  • that, in addition to the personal joy in one’s own musical progress, the positive health effects on memory and mental activity as well as on motor mobility (of hands/fingers) cannot be overlooked and are undisputed by doctors and ultimately
  • that they (the children) would be happy to make music with me when I visit them.

Even Aristotle was striven for with a quotation: “In the essence of music lies the joy of making music. “Ergo, give joy to the mother and to all of us by accepting the gift and facing this challenge” was the final sentence in my son’s argumentation. I had nothing to oppose this phalanx of wishes and expectations, and so I was forced to promise to at least try honestly and “hold out” for the period of time planned.
So the piano at home was tuned professionally. When our piano tuner curiously asked me who wanted to “maltreat” the instrument in the future, I told him my “story”. He congratulated me on my decision, but immediately advised me against the planned “online lessons”. “This is just throwing money out and won’t help you at all. What you need is someone who teaches you the individual steps in a logical way, guides you and checks and corrects you in your game. Without this supervision you will teach yourself only the wrong things and quickly lose the desire to play the piano. You will often be frustrated because you cannot recognize mistakes yourself and if you do, you cannot correct them yourself due to lack of knowledge. He predicted that I would soon give up, unnerved.

Then he referred me to a piano teacher in Bonn, who mainly deals with teaching older people and has had good success with it. He recommended that I contact this piano teacher, Mrs. Gabriele Paqué, in the Blücherstraße in Bonn and inform myself about the teaching concept and all other modalities of teaching. I did so and after a detailed discussion with and advice from Mrs. Paqué I took a free trial lesson, which I liked, convinced me of the concept of the lessons and made me want to play more music.
Today – after almost four months – I always enjoy going to every lesson. Not to “work off” my gift, but because playing the piano is fun and enjoyable, because the workload is demanding and because daily practice brings visible or audible progress. The weekly critical evaluation by the “teacher” is usually frustrating for the “student”, because the shortcomings in one’s own playing and in the understanding of time and music are quickly made clear. In the end, however, pointing out these shortcomings helps to improve one’s own playing, to better understand the musical concept of the pieces and to increase personal satisfaction. The ambition and incentive to do it better next time and “show her” is often the result of a lesson that often passes far too quickly.

To put it short, the above-mentioned Aristotle’s quote already applies to me today without any restrictions, even if my “far better half” (the one to whom – according to Peter Ustinov – one owes obedience) always puts on the headphones at the beginning of my daily practice lesson at home in order to be able to watch and listen to television undisturbed.
However, we, i.e. my friend – the piano – and I, fully understand this.

A satisfied 73 year old “student”.

Turn of the year - The thoughts of a student

Turn of the year 2012/2013 – I, female, 67 years old, am taking stock: early retirement due to various illnesses. Physically considerably restricted. Single, living alone. Childless. Peers take care of grandchildren, life partner, pets. Or they practice various sports, join various clubs. All this is not given with me. The prospect of an increasing number of illnesses or therapies determining my lifetime had something very depressing about it.

I was looking for a positive counterbalance to all the negatives that resulted from the health problems.

In early youth I had played the guitar for a short time. But to resume or further develop this again is impossible due to the health conditions.

Already as a child I wished to learn to play the piano. However, I could never realize this. And in the meantime, I was still informed that only those who started playing the piano in early childhood could master this demanding instrument.

Nevertheless, the thought did not let go of me. While googling I came across Mrs. Paqué’s offer: “Creative piano playing” for adults. In the beginning there was a trial lesson to show whether my wish was feasible at all.

So I went to the “aptitude test” and was immediately hooked. Mrs. Paqué understands very well how to build small “successes” into the first musical attempts, which simply inspired me.

Now the lessons are running in Studio Paqué. We practice at home. As often and as regularly as possible.

How do I feel about having lessons at my age and in my special condition?

I think it’s great, despite the advanced years of my life, despite all the restrictions, to learn something so beautiful all by myself, without pressure to perform, without the pressure to succeed. Mrs. Paqué’s method is exactly tailored to me. It even allows me to play “four-handed” every now and then. It is in the nature of things that Mrs. Paqué is the main part of it. But I am “involved” – wonderful!

This creates a dialogue between the instrument and me. If I do everything right, the piano rewards me with beautiful sounds. If I’m nervous, if I play dirty or if I simply miss the notes, the piano warns me with correspondingly gruff sounds.

It demands all my concentration. I absolutely agree with that. While practicing, I am pleased to discover that I really do turn completely to the notes, the keys, the touch.

The room is filled with the sounds. Not for a second do I think about my complaints.

A very welcome effect – like after an effective painkiller, only without any. So the time I have because of my age as well as my life situation becomes a real bonus. A real enrichment, which I would not like to miss any more.

An enthusiastic “student”!
