In Hugo Wolf‘s musical setting of Paul Heyse‘s poetic collection, which is called Italian but written in German, we experience the love affair between a man and a woman in an almost infinite variety of facets – a spectrum of moods and different faces of love: infatuation, seduction, tender advances, mistrust and jealousy, pride and mockery, quarrels and separation, anger and despair, masochism, suffering, hurt feelings and renewed reconciliation… Wolf’s piano accompaniment comments sensitively, caricatures – sometimes warm-hearted, sometimes mocking – and always full of humour. Hugo Wolf’s last completed song cycle is a work of contrasts and an absolute masterpiece of the song repertoire.
Baritone Fabian Hemmelmann studied with Prof. Thomas Quasthoff (Detmold) and Prof. Klesie Kelly-Moog (Cologne). After his first performances at the age of 19 of Schubert’s Winterreise and Schumann’s Dichterliebe, he devoted himself intensively to special song projects during his studies, presenting Franz Schubert’s Die Schöne Müllerin in a guitar version with guitarist Christoph Weißbrod in concerts in Giessen and Frankfurt. In autumn 2015, he took on the role of deputy artistic director of the Cologne series Im Zentrum Lied, for which he designs his own song programmes.
Dorothea Jakob studied singing at the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music in Dresden with Ilse Hahn and at the same time began studying conducting with Hans-Christoph Rademann, continuing her studies at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague with Jos van Veldhoven and at the Robert Schumann University of Music in Düsseldorf with Anders Eby. A particular artistic focus of her work is song, which she studied intensively in courses with Olaf Bär, Ulrich Eisenlohr and Han Louis Meijer.
Hiroko Matta-Klein comes from Miyazaki in Japan. After studying music in her hometown, she continued her musical education with Prof. Dina Yoffe at the Anton Rubinstein Academy in Düsseldorf. Through her studies at the academy and numerous performances in Germany and Europe, she not only perfected her playing as a solo pianist, but also discovered her enthusiasm for chamber music. After graduating from the academy, Hiroko studied piano and chamber music under Prof. Yu Kakuno, Prof. Kiyoshi Okayama and Prof. Katsuya Matsubara at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music, where she received her master’s degree in 2011.
